A Chevrolet in the desert

Your Chevy’s transmission is one of the hardest working components in your car. It works continually, shifting your gears and enabling your car to move. The numerous components in the transmission can wear or get damaged. If this happens, you’ll need a transmission repair. As your Chevy dealer, we can fix any problem for you. These are some of the signs that your transmission needs to be checked.

Strange Transmission Noises

Your Chevy transmission shifts quietly between gears. If you hear strange noises coming from the transmission, this means you have a transmission problem. Buzzing and whining sounds are two of the possible sounds produced by an automatic transmission. Manual transmissions produce harsher and louder clunking noises.

These sounds are disturbing and can represent several different problems. The most likely cause of the noises is a lack of transmission fluid. Transmission fluid serves numerous purposes, and one of these is lubricating the transmission parts to prevent friction damage. Our technicians can check your transmission fluid and top it up if it’s low.

Leaking Fluid

Transmission fluid is vital for your transmission. It lubricates all of the moving parts, protecting them against friction damage. It helps to lower the temperature in the transmission by absorbing the heat generated by the hundreds of moving parts. It also provides hydraulic power that allows your gears to move smoothly and easily. A leak can have serious consequences for your transmission.

The fluid is bright or dark red, which usually makes a leak easy to spot. A fluid leak can occur if your transmission isn’t regularly serviced. During a service, our technicians check all the transmission components to ensure that they are in good condition. A leak can occur from several different places, but our technicians will find and fix the leak.

Burning Smells

When we service your transmission, we also replace the transmission fluid. This fluid serves many purposes, but it does need to be replaced regularly. If the fluid isn’t replaced, it will start to develop problems. Old fluid loses its heat-resistant properties, and it becomes more sluggish. The sluggish movement is due to debris in the transmission that’s absorbed by the fluid.

Older fluid can overheat and start to burn. If this happens, you’ll smell a stench similar to burning rubber. Burnt transmission fluid isn’t able to provide hydraulic pressure, and this will make your gears more difficult to shift. We will flush the transmission to remove the old fluid and then refill it with fresh fluid.

Transmission problems are usually easy to fix if they’re identified as soon as they start. If you suspect you have a problem, call our service department at Chevrolet of Ottawa.
