Prompt recognition of worn-out tires not only ensures a smooth and safe drive, but it can also positively impact fuel efficiency and the lifespan of your Chevrolet. If you’re noticing any of the signs listed below, it’s probably time to visit your Chevrolet dealer and see about some new tires.

Tire Tread Wear

One of the most visible signs that your Chevrolet might need tires is the condition of the tire tread. Tire treads are designed to provide traction and channel water from beneath the tire to improve wet grip. But over time, the tread wears down. If the tread depth on any of your tires falls below 1/16th of an inch (or 1.6 millimeters), it’s time for a replacement.

Vibration and Noise

Another indication of a potential need for new wheels can be an unusual amount of vibration or noise when driving. While some vibration is normal, particularly on poorly paved roads, excessive vibration could signal an issue with your tires. This might be due to misaligned or unbalanced tires, internal damage in the tire, or simply because they’re worn out.

Cracks and Bulges

Visible damage to your Chevrolet’s tires, such as cracks, cuts, or bulges, is a clear sign of trouble. Bulges or blisters on the outer surface of the tire indicate that the rigid internal frame has been damaged, allowing air pressure to reach the flexible outer layers. This kind of damage is a potential safety hazard and should be addressed immediately.

Age of the Tires

The age of your tires is another important consideration. Even if the tread is not overly worn, most manufacturers recommend replacing tires every six years, regardless of use. Over time, the rubber in tires degrades, potentially leading to failure. This will especially be a problem if you regularly expose your tires to extremes of heat and cold by your summer or holiday travels.

Tire Pressure Loss

Frequent loss of tire pressure could also signal that tires are in order for your Chevrolet. Tires naturally lose some pressure over time, but if you find yourself having to top off more often than usual, it could mean there’s a leak. While sometimes a simple patch can fix the problem, in many cases, tire replacement is the most reliable solution.

Handling and Traction Issues

Lastly, if you notice any change in your vehicle’s handling or traction, particularly in wet conditions, this may indicate your tires are worn out. This can manifest as longer stopping distances, less responsive steering, or your vehicle feeling unstable during turns.
